Biowaste treatment and landfill site excursion

09.05.2019 Cooperation, Education, Events

The sun was shining again over Espoo when we went on an interesting (and occaisionally smelly!) tour around HSY’s modern, circular economy-themed waste treatement centre at Ämmässuo. There our engineering students learned about the treatment of biowaste. Two of our thesis students collected biowaste-compost samples for their research projects on the macro- and microplastics in biowaste and how they pass through to the final compost product. We also explored the…

Educational collaboration with Premix Group

02.05.2019 Cooperation, Education

Thanks to educational collaboration between Premix Group and Arcada UAS, our materials engineering students get hands-on experience with advanced polymers. Following a guest lecture by marketing director Eira Kärjä of Premix Group, they provided us with samples of their PRE-ELEC dissipative and conductive polymers. Our students were very enthusiastic to investigate these important materials that have markedly different electrical properties compared to conventional polymers.

Excursion to Vantaa’s waste-to-energy plant

02.05.2019 Education, Events

Our engineering students visited a modern, and among the best in the world, waste-to-energy plants. It burns unusable waste from the Helsinki region rather than it being put in a landfill. It meets about half of the district heat needed by the entire city of Vantaa, covers about 30% of the electricity demand of Vantaa, and reduces significantly the emissions of greenhouse gases compared to conventional energy production. Exchange student…

Engineering students from the degree programme in Materials Processing Technology working as waste sorting specialists

17.12.2018 Student Life

Arcada and Fortum Waste Solutions Oy (previously Ekokem) have been in a mutually beneficial collaboration for some years already. In June 2016 Fortum launched a Circular Economy Village for effective material recovery from various waste streams. Therein lies a plastic refinery to recover plastic materials from waste streams, even consumer waste. I was one of the students working as a project assistant in the preceding tests for the plastic…

Ruiskuvalupäivät in Lahti

17.12.2018 Events, Research

Muoviyhdistys (the Finnish Plastic Association) organises seminar days annually for professionals in both extrusion and injection moulding technologies. This year I was sent to represent Arcada and project Teknetium in the event. Personally I chose to aim for making new industrial connections and looking for new ways to collaborate, new partners to work with and companies we could possibly visit with students from our Materials Processing programme. The event turned…

Frukostmingel på EM tillsammans med Pöyry

05.12.2018 Cooperation, Education

Curiosity makes active, activity makes future

05.12.2018 Projects, Research

Arcada’s project Teknetium sent me to Gijon in northern Spain to an AM motion summer school to learn about different additive manufacturing (AM, known commonly as 3D printing) technologies from European specialists. The most eager I was to learn about the standards in AM, and the process of standardization. In addition to this, the programme included classes on different AM processes, there are so many different kinds – and more…

Ellen MacArthur Foundation: ”Finland, the front runner on higher education within Circular Economy.”

19.09.2018 Cooperation, Projects

Around 40 representatives from 19 UAS (Finland) gathered up for a development project ”Circular Economy-UAS ” kick-off meeting at Arcada 23.8.18. Earlier this year Ellen MacArthur Foundation started their own study, and has now published the first results as a ”global snap-shot” on higher education within Circular Economy. The participants of ”Circular Economy-UAS” project were involved with this study too. EMAF’s Research Analyst states the following: ”From a geographical perspective,…

Arcada’s students competed in the #IntelligenceHunt3 finals in Gothenburg – Shared Bronze!

19.06.2018 Education, Events

Greetings from Seafocus #Intelligencehunt3 Finals in Gothenburg 12.6.2018 3 engineering students (Materials Processing Technology) from Arcada travelled to Gothenburg to present their competition cases in Seafocus #Intelligencehunt3 Finals. The competition finals were organised this time in sunny Lindholmen Science Park, Gothenburg, right next to Chalmers University of Technology. The ”Smart Helsinki” Team including a competitor from Arcada reached shared bronze with the competition case assigned by The Port of Helsinki….

Learning about advanced coating technology at Teknos

25.05.2018 Cooperation, Education, Student Life

Our materials processing technology students visited Teknos in Helsinki today to learn about their innovative industrial coating technologies. Their specialist Tuomas Aspiala introduced us to many applications including corrosion protection of metals, water sealants for roofs and antimicrobial paints for hospitals. We then suited up in their testing facility, and got first hand experience spraying polyurea. It is a waterproof polymer coating that cures in seconds, and due to its…
